Why are you angry? Thoughts from angry women across Canada
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Wow! We've been overwhelmed by the tremendous amount of support for The Women Are Angry campaign. Media across the country have covered the story, and on December 13, 2006, this website was discussed during Question Period in the House of Commons (click here to view the Hansard)! Thank you to all of our supporters for sending postcards, buying buttons, and most of all for telling us why you're angry!! Here are just a few quotes from angry women across the country! Please keep sending your thoughts to us at thewomenareangry AT gmail.com.

I grew up in downtown East Vancouver where women can fall through the cracks of the pavement and make no sound. Women are still violated on a statistically higher level than boys/men in the home, in schools, on the streets, at work. Where is the equality in that? Perhaps Stephen Harper could come spend a week in my city and I could show him a thing or two about equality, Main and Hastings style. Angry in Sointula, BC

I was angry because it was another WOMAN, Bev Oda, who was acting as the initiator of these cuts - which added insult to injury. Angry in Saskatoon, SK

According to recent figures, the number of male Members of Parliament is 5 times that of women Members of Parliament in the House of Commons. And yet, the Honourable Bev Oda agrees with the Harper government that equality is no longer an issue for Canadian Women!?!?!??? Angry in Sudbury, ON

I am an old woman now but over the years I have fought steadily for the advances women have made... I am extremely angry because we did work very hard, demonstrated in Ottawa, etc. Now it's all going away by the hands of one government. Angry in Edmonton, AB

It's so awkward when your Prime Minister owes you money... Email Harper at pm@pm.gc.ca and tell him he owes you (or a woman in your life) 29 cents. All payment options accepted. Angry in Calgary, AB

In a letter to Bev Oda: You have, in one financial stroke, almost entirely erased a network of women trying in earnest to evolve our laws and our nation. You have stripped away a cohesive voice thus rendering women, once again, with muted ability to forward a striving for equal and diverse status. Angry in Vancouver, BC

| To suggest, as Harper has, that the fight for "equality" is over is as ludicrous as declaring that we live in a "post-feminist world" or that it's a "matriarchal system." Neither of these are true for as long as women are earning less than men, as long as only 21% of our Parliament is comprised of female MPs, as long as women remain "the sex class," as long as women are afraid to leave their homes at night, as long as male violence against women is prominent, and much, much more. | I'm angry because even though I am not yet a woman, but only still a young woman of 14, I do not get the same respect as my male peers. At my previous school the principal did not take me seriously on issues I thought needed to be addressed but when my friend (who's a guy) approached him about the same issue, he gave it his full attention. Angry in North Bay, ON |

I read about your campaign in the newspaper and it is a good idea. However, I have slightly different statistics regarding how much women earn compared to men... An Aboriginal woman earns 35 cents, a Black woman earns 65 cents and a white woman earns 75 cents for every dollar a white man earns. As a woman of colour, I would be happy to wear a button that speaks to my demographic. Angry in Toronto, ON

In a nation as rich as ours, with a 13 billion dollar surplus, the fact that we're fighting not for more funding but just to keep what is already in place is beyond ridiculous. It's incomprehensible. Angry in Halifax, NS

I was in shock to hear that the Conservative government, with no debate in the House, or input from Canadian voters, chose to call the women's equality agenda inept and render it useless by cutting off program funding almost by half. That they did this under the guise of already achieved gender equality and access rights is more salt in the wound. Angry in Halifax, NS

As a single mother, I went back to school to obtain a post secondary education, however after 16 years I still live in poverty. I am active in my community advocating for anti-poverty. Angry in Toronto, ON
