How You Can Help

It’s going to take some work to remedy the inequality that women still face in many areas of life. There are many things that you can do to help, however, even if you aren’t a professional activist. Staying informed, contacting your government official, and donating your time and money are just some of the things you can do to work for women’s rights.

Stay Informed

It’s key to stay abreast of the what’s going on in the world of women’s rights. Action by private firms and the government can compromise women’s rights; outcry and activism by a concerned citizenry have the ability to prevent these terrible actions from happening quietly. Here are some places to stay updated on recent news about women’s rights:

Contact Your Local Representative

When you do hear about an upcoming legislative issue that you feel is relevant to women, you should contact your local Congressperson, through snail mail or email. You can find your representative in the Congressional House here, and Congress.org has a listing of federal, state, and local representatives. The National Organization for Women has convenient online forms that let you quickly respond to your representative about specific issues.

Donate Your Time

As an older woman, one of the most effective ways that you can change things for the next generation is to mentor young girls. Mentoring programs exist at every age level, and may focus around a specific skill or subject.

Women who are under-represented in their fields, such as women scientists, doctors, or other professionals, should especially consider mentoring, since young girls lack female role models in those careers. Another way to donate your time is to volunteer for women’s rights organizations and attend events to promote awareness of women’s issues.

Donate Your Money

Whether you’re too busy to donate your time to women’s organizations, or just want to do everything possible, giving a monetary donation is a great way to help non-profit groups doing work for women’s rights. Whatever your particular passion is, you can find a women’s organization working specifically in that area.
