Helpful Resources for (Angry) Women

protesterThere’s no doubt that women have come along way since America’s founding, and even in the last fifty years. But, erasing a legacy of oppression is an ongoing process, one that still continues today. Here are some resources for women who may still be experiencing discrimination based on their gender.

Work and Economic Issues

  • The Wage Gap: The National Organization for Women hosts this informational page about women’s pay at work, the inequality that exists, and what you can do to change it.
  • Know Your Rights: Sex Discrimination: Here you can read about the different ways sex discrimination manifests itself in the workplace, as well as practical strategies for addressing discrimination and asserting your rights.

Reproductive Rights

  • NARAL: This pro-choice organization has extensive information about family planning and the reproductive laws on a state-by-state basis.
  • Planned Parenthood: Margaret Sanger’s vision for a world with reproductive options for all women is still being realized today by Planned Parenthood. The organization has centers all across the U.S., offering birth control and abortion services with costs based on a sliding scale.

Domestic Violence

  • The National Domestic Violence Hotline: If you, or someone you know, is suffering from domestic abuse, this hotline can offer quick support and advice. You can read about what domestic violence is, how to get help, and how to help a friend.
  • National Coalition Against Domestic Violence: This national organization offers help to abused women across the U.S. Their site has resources for protecting yourself and recovering from an abusive relationship.

Sexual Assault and Rape

  • RAINN: RAINN (Rape, Abuse, & Incest National Network) is the largest national organization helping survivors of sexual trauma. You can read online about finding help for yourself or a loved one, getting counseling, and raising awareness about sexual violence.
  • It Happened to Alexa Foundation: This organization exists to help and support women who are going through a criminal trial after rape or sexual assault.

Minority Women

  • Minority Women’s Health: Women of color face particular health issues throughout their lives; you can find the details on this government website.
  • Black Women: The Unfinished Agenda: This article details the career areas where African American women are not represented, and the obstacles they face in their lives and careers.
